JAMB

A Federal High Court in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has remanded four individuals on charges of registration impersonation and examination malpractices during the recently concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The court proceedings took place on Tuesday, as confirmed by JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin.

The defendants, identified as Peter Okereke (29), Timilehin Akinwale (22), Olayinka Mustapha (23), and Feranmi Adesuyi (29), were arraigned for registration impersonation and examination impersonation, respectively. All four individuals pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

The prosecuting counsel, Moses Osimhen, requested that the court remand the suspects at Olokuta Prison until the date of the hearing. However, the defense counsel, Clement Falana and Austin Agbounghale, argued that the offense was bailable and urged the court to grant the suspects bail.

Presiding over the case, Justice T.B Adegoke ordered the remand of the suspects at Olokuta Prison and adjourned the case until July 12 for further proceedings.

According to the details provided in the charge sheet, Feranmi Adesuyi is accused of conspiring with an individual named Sanusi Tunde, who is currently at large, to complete his registration and impersonate Sanusi Tunde during the JAMB examination at the Amable Nigeria Limited CBT Centre in Owo. The charges against Adesuyi are in violation of section 10 of the Examination Malpractices Act, Cap E15, LFN, 2004, and punishable under section 3(2)(c) of the same act. On the other hand, Peter Okereke, Timilehin Akinwale, and Olayinka Mustapha are accused of impersonating other individuals during the examination, which is contrary to section 3(3)(c) of the Examination Malpractices Act, Cap E15, LFN, 2004.

JAMB has been taking strong measures to crack down on malpractices in the UTME and the use of fake results in Direct Entry registration. As part of these efforts, JAMB has announced that applicants seeking direct entry admission to universities will now be required to sit for the UTME to validate their possession of A-level results. This new development aims to curb the malpractices associated with direct entry applications.
