The White House has announced that a Presidential Delegation from the United States will attend the inauguration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 29, 2023, in Abuja, Nigeria. The delegation, comprising nine members, will represent President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. at the event. The delegation will be led by Marcia L. Fudge, the Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The full statement released by the White House confirms the participation of the delegation and provides details about its members. The delegation includes David Greene (the Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja), as well as notable individuals such as Sydney Kamlager-Dove (a United States Representative from California), and Marisa Lago (the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade in the U.S. Department of Commerce). Other members of the delegation include General Michael E. Langley (Commander of U.S. Africa Command), and Enoh T. Ebong (the Director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency).

Representing the U.S. Department of State are Mary Catherine Phee (the Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs), and Judd Devermont (the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs in the National Security Council). Monde Muyangwa (the Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Africa in the U.S. Agency for International Development), completes the delegation.

President Biden's decision to send a high-level delegation underscores the importance of U.S.-Nigeria relations and demonstrates the United States' commitment to the democratic transition and governance in Nigeria. The presence of the delegation at the inauguration signifies the continued partnership between the two countries and their shared interests in promoting stability, development, and cooperation.

The inauguration of President-elect Bola Tinubu is a significant moment for Nigeria, marking the beginning of a new presidential term. As one of Africa's most populous and influential nations, Nigeria's political developments carry regional and international implications. The presence of the U.S. delegation reaffirms the longstanding ties between the United States and Nigeria and serves as a gesture of mutual respect and collaboration.

The Presidential Delegation's attendance at the inauguration further strengthens the diplomatic relationship between the two nations and sets the stage for continued engagement and cooperation on various issues of common interest.
