Messi's options ahead of potential PSG exit

Lionel Messi looks certain to leave PSG this summer
Lionel Messi looks certain to leave PSG this summer

Lionel Messi, one of the greatest football players of all time, is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) this summer. The Argentine joined the French club in August 2021 on a two-year deal, but recent events have made it clear that his time in Paris will be short-lived.

Despite his impressive performances on the pitch, Messi's future at PSG was already looking bleak before his unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia caused a rift between the player and the club. PSG's failure to win the Champions League and recent fan anger directed towards the club's highest-earning stars further compounded the situation.

While several reports had suggested that Messi had struck a deal worth £522 million to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and reunite with his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the Middle East, his father Jorge has rubbished those claims, suggesting that no agreement has yet been reached with any club.

That being said, there are several potential destinations for the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner. One possibility is a move to America's Major League Soccer (MLS), with Inter Miami reportedly keen to secure his signature. The Florida-based outfit, co-owned by former Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham, are still in their development phase as a club but have made significant progress in recent years.

Another option for Messi is an emotional return to his beloved Barcelona. The Argentine spent 21 glorious years with the Catalan club, becoming their all-time top scorer with 672 goals and earning God-like status among the club's supporters. However, Barca's financial difficulties mean that a reunion with Messi seems unlikely at this stage.

Ultimately, Messi's next destination remains a mystery. While the player has made it clear that he will not be extending his stay at PSG, there is no clear frontrunner for his signature. Nevertheless, with Messi turning 36 in June, this could be his final opportunity to secure one big move before hanging up his boots. Whatever happens, football fans around the globe will be eagerly watching to see where the great man ends up next.
