The evacuation exercise to bring back Nigerian citizens who were caught in the crisis in Sudan is looking bright as the first batch of evacuees, comprising 274 individuals, has arrived in Abuja, the nation's capital. The evacuees were transported by an Air Peace airplane from Aswan, Egypt, to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at about 11:30 pm Wednesday.

It is noteworthy that the evacuation was not without its share of challenges. The process began last Wednesday and was faced with logistical and diplomatic hurdles.

It is expected that a total of 5,500 Nigerians will benefit from the evacuation exercise. These individuals were moved by bus from Sudan to Egypt, from where they will be airlifted to Nigeria. According to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), "No Nigerian citizen remains in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital."
